The History

The original Garthowen was built in the early 1900's and run as boarding house accommodation.

Over the years the Akaroa house had undergone several alterations and additions. We purchased the property in 2004 with the intention of returning it to it's former glory. Regretfully, the house was discovered to be beyond restoration and the decision was made to demolish the old building, but to rebuild in a similar style.

Recycled native timbers,  such as rimu, cedar and kauri have been used throughout, most recovered during demolition. With it's sweeping verandahs, the elegance and graciousness of the original Garthowen has been recaptured
