NewsletterGARTHOWEN NEWSLETTER Spring is here in Akaroa. We've experienced one of the wettest winters for years. Akaroa was hit hard with the September 4th 7.1 earthquake also, 95 brick chimneys were damaged with quite a few falling through the roofs creating internal damage. Our RSA monument has taken a hit also with the side of the statue falling off, this has since been taken down piece by piece and will be reconstructed at a later date. Four older B & B's have had to close until further assessment and repairs are carried out. Garthowen, being a new home has come through with no damage at all. Aftershocks still going on with another 5.0 last week, just keeps us all on our toes! Forward bookings are very good and must mean most people have heard about the area and are staying for 2-3 days which is longer than normal. The town is trucking along and a few business have changed hands. Harbour 72 is now The Trading Post, and By Jove Restaurant is opening as a Thai Restaurant mid November. Twice as many cruise ships are coming to Akaroa for the season fares well for the town's business sector after a rather harsh winter. On the home front, we have acquired another Jack Russell pup named Bella, she's now 6 months old and VERY busy! Not sure if Jessie thinks she so great though and just tolerates her. Ian and I are looking forward to a very busy season and are hoping to see past guests in our lovely village in the not too distant future. Garthowen is for sale as we are getting vibes from our children for not seeing the grandchildren, plus the house is too big for the two of us! Regards Sharon & Ian 23/10/10 |
